Returning for its XII edition from July 23 to 28, 2024, is the Assisi Suono Sacro Festival. This year’s theme is Signum, highlighting the importance of finding signs of the Sacred in music. The edition ranges from contemporary to experimental, without forgetting the great classical tradition. Featured alongside Artistic Director Andrea Ceccomori are the Suonosfera Trio, a formation that has been growing in its various declinations (trio, quartet, quintet, and orchestra) within Assisi Suono Sacro, musicians from the Phonetic Orchestra from Germany, the winner of the Florestano Rossomandi 2024 international piano competition Andrea Di Stefano, pianist Rosaria Dina Rizzo, and violinist Angelo De Magistris.

The festival will kick off on July 23 with a concert, in collaboration with MEP Music Ensemble Publishing, featuring music by some of the most interesting contemporary composers of the new generation: Marcello Appignani, Virginio Zoccatelli, Roberto Piana, Francesco Alessandro Meloni, Mario Pagotto, and Roberta Vacca, performed by the Suonosfera Trio with Sayako Obori on violin, Tommaso Bruschi on cello, and Maria Ponomarova on piano.

On July 24, there will be the presentation of a special project, for the first time in Italy, titled Sleep Music, literally music for sleeping. The protagonist will be the Phonetic Orchestra, a German-Australian formation, supported by the Effea Foundation: Jonathan Heilbron (Double Bass, Piano, chord organ, and percussions), Brett Thompson (Guitar, chord organ, and percussions) e Rebecca Lane (Flutes, chord organ, and percussions). The Sleep Music concert will be held from 11 PM until the early hours in the park of Villa Taticchi in Perugia: a journey into a world of sounds written and designed to accompany souls into the depths of their essence and sleep. Far from being music for mere relaxation, the Sleep Concert project, primarily inspired by the research of authors like Brian Eno and Max Richter, seeks a sound away from noise, far from the aggressiveness often found on large stages. It is a journey to promote relaxation in the REM phase of participants who, besides sleeping, can also meditate on soft cushions laid on the grass; blankets or rugs are recommended. For musicians and the public who want to meet the artists of the Phonetic Orchestra, there is a scheduled meeting at 11 AM on July 24 at the Scuola Sant’Antonio in Assisi.

On July 26, there will be a special meeting-concert with artistic director flutist Andrea Ceccomori, where he will discuss the power of music with an emblematic title: From the Original Sound to Everywhere, a Quest for the One through Music and Art. It will be a moment of reflection on the still-hidden potential of musical language, an analysis of the contemporary music situation, its use and enjoyment, to thus launch new horizons and chart new possible routes.

The festival will close on Sunday, July 28, with a double concert: in the morning at 10:30 AM featuring the winner of the Florestano Rossomandi 2024 international piano competition, Andrea Di Stefano, a versatile musician, winner of national and international competitions, and protagonist of numerous tours around Europe; the artist will perform music by Liszt. In the evening, at 9:30 PM, we will have the Duo Insolito 8cento with Sara Dina Rizzo on piano and Angelo De Magistris on violin, who will play pieces by Clementi and Donizetti.

All concerts except for the Phonetic Orchestra’s on the 24th will take place in Assisi at the cloister of the Scuola Sant’Antonio with entrance via Sant’Agnese. Admission will be free for all except for the event on the 26th with Andrea Ceccomori (by reservation at assisisuonosacro@gmail.com).
